MISSION & HISTORY

THE UNEXPECTED TRAINING GROUND.

The show is spectacular. The confidence, persistence, teamwork, and belonging built behind it matter even more.

OUR MISSION

EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES.

Through uniquely challenging circus arts experiences, Circus of the Kids helps children and youth strengthen self-esteem, confidence, perseverance, teamwork, and leadership.

Participants practice courage in a supportive setting, contribute to an ensemble, and create memories that last far beyond the final bow.

WHY CIRCUS?

COURAGE CAN BE PRACTICED.

Circus gives young people a powerful reason to focus, persist, trust one another, and take pride in contributing to something larger than themselves. Every new skill becomes evidence: “I can do hard things.”

THE STORY SO FAR

FROM ONE LIFE-CHANGING SKILL TO A NATIONAL YOUTH PROGRAM.

Before 1982

Bruce finds his place in the ring

After struggling with coordination as a child, Bruce Pfeffer learned to juggle, became a performer, and discovered how circus disciplines could transform confidence and opportunity.

1982

Circus of the Kids begins

While directing a guest circus show, Bruce watched young participants achieve skills they had believed were impossible. That moment became COTK’s calling.

Decades of touring

Communities become ensembles

COTK partners with schools, summer camps, group homes, and nonprofit organizations through focused workshops and intensive residencies.

Today

The next act is access

New leadership, partnerships, scholarships, equipment, and operational capacity can help more young people experience the ring.

WHAT STAYS AT THE CENTER

GROWTH THAT REACHES BEYOND THE SHOW.

CONFIDENCE

Built through brave attempts and visible progress.

TEAMWORK

Made real through trust, timing, and shared responsibility.

RESILIENCE

Practiced each time a participant tries again.

BELONGING

Created when every contribution helps the ensemble succeed.

THE NEXT ACT STARTS HERE

BRING THE EXPERIENCE TO YOUR COMMUNITY.

Schools, camps, families, donors, and sponsors all have a role in expanding access.
